Fast Money Isn't Free Money

It shows up in every small business owner's social feed. Cash in 24 hours. Easy application. Bad credit, no problem.

That's the pitch for merchant cash advances, or MCAs. The Wall Street Journal just showed how badly they can end.

The Anchor Disguised as a Lifeline

MCA funders say they don't make loans. Because of that, they work largely outside the state and federal rules that govern lenders. The WSJ reports that effective costs routinely run into the triple digits. One disclosure showed an estimated annual rate of 2,190 percent.

Repayment doesn't wait for month end. Funders pull money straight from the business's bank account, daily or weekly. They do it even when the owner is short on payroll, inventory or rent.

The results are showing up in court. Small business bankruptcy filings rose 36 percent in the first nine months of 2026, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. The Journal's review of those filings found MCA companies among the creditors in more than half the cases. A federal bankruptcy judge in Tampa said nearly every small business case she sees involves at least one MCA funder, and often several.

One business owner described the pattern well. The money is easy to get, so it becomes a habit. Then the back end gets worse.

A Different Kind of Capital

Apex Commercial Capital was built for the opposite outcome. We lend so businesses can grow and keep what they build, not so they keep coming back for the next advance.

Here's the difference.

What Apex Delivers

Certainty of Execution. When we approve a deal, we close it. No restacking, no surprise sweeps, no fine print that turns a lifeline into a liability.

Proximity of Price. Our pricing tracks the market. It isn't set by how desperate a borrower is.

Fast and Right. We make quick credit decisions, and you talk directly to the people making them. Speed matters, but only when the deal is structured to last.

Beyond the Numbers. Many MCA borrowers get there because a traditional bank turned them down. We look past the credit score and listen to the whole story. That's exactly the borrower we're built to serve.

Real Solutions for Real Businesses

Commercial mortgage, $50K to $2MM. Owner-occupied and investment property, up to 70 percent loan-to-value. We have bridge, nonprofit and story loan programs, and many deals need only light documentation up front. A business owner can turn the equity in their building into working capital at a sensible rate instead of paying an advance funder triple digits.

Equipment finance, starting at $5K. We finance through vendors, brokers and direct channels. The equipment pays for itself over time, and the business owns a productive asset at the end, not a stack of daily debits.

A Message to Brokers, Vendors and Advisors

Your reputation follows every deal you place. If a client ends up in bankruptcy court with three MCA funders on the creditor list, that reflects on everyone who touched the deal. When you send that client to Apex, they get financing that protects their cash flow, their credit and their future. And the relationship you keep is one you'll be proud of.

The Bottom Line

Easy money is the most expensive money there is. Apex offers real capital at fair terms, with repayment a business can actually handle, backed by a bank that has been here for decades.

Before your client signs up for the next cash advance, call Apex. Let's build something that lasts.
